But now we finally have the numbers to prove just how much.<\/span><b> Our first full carbon handprint assessment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, conducted by independent consultancy <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ngsfinland.fi\/\">NGS Finland<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, confirms that ResQ delivers a strong net-positive climate impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.resq-club.com\/blog\/resq-club-climate-impact-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>previous blog post<\/strong>,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we unpacked our carbon footprint. This time, we\u2019re diving into the carbon handprint to reveal the full extent of the climate benefits created through ResQ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>What Is a Carbon Handprint and Why Does It Matter?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;ve probably heard of a carbon footprint: the emissions created by an activity or organization. <\/span><b>A <\/b><b>carbon handprint<\/b><b> captures the opposite \u2014 the positive climate impact enabled by a product or service.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In ResQ\u2019s case, it measures how much greenhouse gas <strong>emissions are <\/strong><\/span><b>avoided<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when surplus meals, groceries, flowers, or other goods are rescued instead of going to waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food waste is a massive climate problem. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every discarded item carries all the emissions from farming, processing, transport, and preparation. When perfectly good products end up in the bin, all those emissions were for nothing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ResQ offers a solution to this problem by ensuring that high-quality products are enjoyed rather than wasted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>The results: A strong &amp; positive net climate impact<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, ResQ Club&#8217;s total <\/span><b>carbon handprint was 3 686 t CO\u2082e<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while our own operational <\/span><b>footprint was just 62 t CO\u2082e<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here&#8217;s how NGS Finland approached it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Life Cycle Assessment Scenarios<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The handprint was calculated using<\/span><b> life cycle assessment (LCA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a standardized method that compares alternative scenarios <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following VTT Carbon handprint guide V. 2.0 guidelines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Baseline scenario: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The item goes unsold \u2192 becomes waste \u2192 no one gets to enjoy it. In some cases, new fresh food must be produced to replace what was wasted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>ResQ scenario: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The item is rescued through our platform \u2192 eaten rather than binned \u2192 fewer new items need to be produced. (Note: rescued items are sold in takeaway packaging, which is included in our calculations.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The different scenario types considered are restaurant meals, cafe products, grocery bags, flowers, wholesale products and cosmetics. The assessment only includes what differs between these scenarios. For example, preparing the original meal happens in both cases, so it doesn&#8217;t affect the comparison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>System boundaries<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The assessment covers all stages from raw material production through food service operations to the point of sale, including storage, manufacturing energy, and takeaway packaging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excluded are energy used by customers for storing or heating items, the waste management of the takeaway packaging, and other environmental impacts beyond greenhouse gas emissions. These boundaries ensure direct service impact assessment and scenario comparability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Calculation methods<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The calculations follow established LCA standards and emission calculation practices. Here&#8217;s what went into them:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Waste amounts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Determined from actual item counts and weights<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transport emissions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Calculated using industry-standard default distances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Restaurant meal emissions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Based on fresh ingredient purchases, with specific emission factors for different protein categories. For two minor protein categories representing only 1.5% of total sales, we used simplified calculations due to limited data\u2014a minor adjustment that doesn&#8217;t affect overall accuracy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Energy consumption:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Calculated using national grid averages<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Packaging emissions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Based on average items per order and standard emission factors for different materials, including transport to points of sale<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Assumptions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because not every detail can be known, some assumptions were needed in the calculations, drawing on scientific databases, ResQ\u2019s own data, and practical experience. Average item and packaging weights, how packaging is used across different scenarios, typical transport distances, and the need for refrigerated deliveries were all estimated using conservative values. In other words, we have intentionally avoided overstating ResQ\u2019s positive climate impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Looking ahead<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this handprint calculation, we can now communicate our impact with greater transparency, confidence, and scientific <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">credibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report&#8217;s findings highlight something essential: <\/span><b>scaling our service has a far greater climate impact than marginal operational tweaks.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we remain committed to keeping our footprint low, the true climate lever lies in enabling more people, businesses, and communities to rescue more surplus goods.
